Steps To Take When Your Business Is Flooding

11/5/2021 (Permalink)

Do not take a flooded home or business as a lighthearted matter.  You should be very serious in your attempts to enter your home after it has been flooded.  Keep these in mind after a flood damage in the Phelps County and surrounding areas.

  • Disconnect all the Electronics-these can start fires if left on
  • Move anything not bolted to the ground-furniture and tables should be moved out
  • Have a Restoration Company remove the water-Extraction of water helps with the drying process
  • Get rid of moisture in the affected area-dehumidification will help keep the mold from growing
  • Disinfect the home-part of the cleaning process is to disinfect the house before rebuilding.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly-tearing out items from the home is naturally the case.  Remember to take into consideration items with asbestos or you could be fined for disposing of them incorrectly.

When in need call SERVPRO of Rolla, we are here to help 24/7.

When Winter Weather Hits

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

When living in Missouri you never know what your going to get. Weather changes so much in Missouri you can have all four seasons in one week. Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.  *A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. **Here are some tips to prevent pipes from freezing.

*Be sure to completely drain water from the swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.

*Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.

*When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.

*Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

After The Storm

8/10/2021 (Permalink)

Storms can bring heavy rains, strong winds and destructive hail. Your home protects you from the elements, so be sure to check it for damage once the storm has passed. It is a good idea to check your property even if you do not suspect any damage. This can help avoid more problems later and determine if you need to make an insurance claim.

Roof
Your roof can be very vulnerable, because so many things can damage it. When you experience high winds, downed tree branches or a hailstorm, after the storm ends, look for these indicators of damage:

  • Holes in the roof
  • Split Seams
  • Missing Shingles
  • Leaks in roof or ceiling

Exteriors

Siding, stucco, and brick are all durable, but they can suffer storm damage. Check for:

  • Cracking, chipping or ding and dents on siding. Check in different lighting because you may see something you missed.
  • Holes in stucco
  • Damaged brick and tuck pointing.
  • Detached or damaged trim, gutters, etc.

General Tips

  • Severe storms often will knock down power lines. If this happens on your property, rope off 30 feet in each direction around the line and do not touch it. Call 911 and the power company immediately.
  • Be sure to do a full check of your property, including things such as your air-conditioning unit, fences, vent caps, etc. And don’t forget to check your vehicles if they were not garaged at the time of the storm.
  • Check your crawl space and basement. You need to be sure no water is getting in, and, if it is, make sure it is removed quickly via a sump pump or underground drainage system.
  • Take pictures of all damage from different angles. Finally, knowing the details of your homeowner’s coverage, your limits and your deductibles can help you during the insurance claims process. It is a great idea to examine your policy and know what your homeowner’s insurance covers now, before the storm.

Information on Hurricane Hazards

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes can be life-threatening as well as cause serious property damage. The National Weather Service lists the following as potential " hurricane hazards."

Storm surge is the abnormal rise of water generated by a storms winds. This hazard is historically the leading cause of hurricane related deaths in the United States. Storm surge and large battering waves can result in large loss of life and causes massive destruction along the coast. Storm surge can travel several miles inland, especially along bays, rivers and estuaries.

Flooding from heavy rains is the second leading cause of fatalities from land falling tropical cyclones. Widespread torrential rains associated with these storms often cause flooding hundreds of miles inland. This flooding can persist for several days after a storm has dissipated.

Winds from a hurricane can destroy buildings and manufactured homes. Signs, roofing material and other items left outside can become flying missiles during hurricanes.

Tornadoes can accompany landfilling tropical cyclones. These tornadoes typically occur in rain brands well away from the center of the storm.

Dangerous waves produced by a tropical cyclones strong winds can pose a significant hazard to coastal residents and mariners. There waves can cause deadly rip currents, significant beach erosion and damage to structures along the coastline, even when the storm is more than 1,000 miles offshore.

Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane. Plan an evacuation route and your emergency plan, take inventory of your property and take steps to protect your home or business.

EXTREME HEAT

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

A summer approaches, it is time to consider safety precautions for extreme heat in the coming months. Heat affects all people, but especially the young, elderly, sick, and overweight. Urban area residents also have a greater chance of being affected than those who live in rural areas due to the heat island effect.

According to the EPA, " the sun can heat dry, exposed urban surfaces, such as roofs and pavement, to temperatures 50-90F hotter that the air, while shaded or moist surface-often in more rural surrounding-remain close to air temperatures." These surface heat islands are stronger during the day when the sin is shining, while the atmospheric heat islands are more likely after sunset " due to the slow release of heat from urban infrastructure."

Whether you are in an urban or rural area, there are several things you can do to prepare for and prevent extreme heat from affecting you. If possible, stay indoors in air conditioning. Be sure to check on your pets who may be outdoors or bring them inside. Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

If you must go outside, ear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, and be sure to apply sunscreen often. Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, which are heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; nausea or vomiting; and fainting, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is life- threatening. Sings of heat stroke are a high body temperatures (103+), rapid and strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness. If you think someone has a heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move the person somewhere cool. Reduce body temperature with cool, wet cloths or a bath. Do no give a person with heat stroke fluids, and treat the situation as a serious medical emergency (CDC).

Winter Weather

12/18/2017 (Permalink)
