Controlling Moisture in Your Home

Controlling Moisture in Your Home

Extra moisture in your Rolla, MO home can cause damage and encourage potentially harmful mold and mildew growth.

How can you reduce moisture in your home? Learn to keep moisture out and prevent damage and mold.
Activities such as cooking, bathing, and dish washing can add moisture into the air. Even some heating appliances can cause additional humidity in your home, for example: unvented gas or kerosene models. Droplets can accumulate on common cool surfaces during the winter, such as windows, walls, and doors that lack proper insulation. This can cause rot and peeling of paint and is a good environment for mold growth.
If you happen to see moisture accumulating, be sure to dry it promptly. Be sure to take care of the issue that is causing the moisture.
Storm doors and windows can minimize cool surfaces in the winter by separating the interior from cold air outside. Upgrading your windows to double and triple pane can also help insulate the interior glass. This will also make your home more energy efficient.
Opening drapes and blinds in the winter allows warmth to the interior glass. Some condensation can occur, but the improved circulation makes it less probable to accumulate. Insulating cold-water pipes eliminates a common cool surface.
Bathroom exhaust fans, dryer exhaust and ducted kitchen exhaust hoods that vent to the outside remove moisture that some activities create. Keep the devices free of dust, lint, grease or anything that could keep them from working efficiently.

Other ways to reduce air moisture:
•Covering pots while cooking, when possible
•Leaving room doors open to allow good air circulation
•Storing firewood outside
•Covering aquariums

Moisture in the home is not always as obvious as water beading on a window. Poor ventilation in an attic can result in condensation, promoting mold growth in the framing elements of the house. A sealed, unused fireplace creates an opportunity for moisture problems. If air doesn't circulate in the fireplace, condensation can accumulate on the walls and soak into the masonry. If you have a crawlspace, moisture from the soil can enter your home, increasing the level of humidity. A vapor barrier over the bare soil blocks the moisture.
Rain that seeps into your home's foundation can lead to moisture problems. Make sure your gutters work properly and direct water away from your home's foundation.

Some moisture problems require more complex solutions, and sources of moisture may be hidden. It may be time to call a professional like SERVPRO. Extra moisture in your home can cause mold. Mold can produce allergens and irritants so if you suspect you have a mold issue, you should call us to inspect your Rolla, MO area home. We are trained mold damage specialists who get started quickly to get your Rolla, MO area home (or business) back to normal, with specific training and certifications to handle your restoration needs.

Where To Look for Mold in Your Home

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

If you know where to look for mold, you can stop mold damage before it gets too serious.  In Rolla, MO, this is an important issue for any homeowner.  Mold can be predictable, so it is a good idea to educate yourself about how mold works in order to stay on top of it.

What are Mold and Mildew?

Mold is a type of fungus that can cause structural damage in your home.  It reproduces via microscopic airborne spores, so it can only be seen once it begins growing as a colony.  Mold growth has a fuzzy appearance due to the multicellular filaments known as hyphen and can present in a variety of colors, such as black, brown, blue, green, yellow, pink and white.  It emits a distinct musty odor.  Mildew growth is a specific type of mold that appears chalky rather than fuzzy and is usually white or gray.  It does not cause as much damage as mold.

Where Does Mold Like to Hang Out?

Since moisture facilitates mold, it is best to identify any sources of this in your home, such as leaky pipes.  Mold likes to feed on organic materials such as drywall, paper, wood and fibers that have been exposed to water.  You should routinely inspect the following places for mold damage.

  • Basement
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom
  • Area near HVAC
  • Anywhere that appears damp

What Should You do When You Find it?

If you locate evidence of damage from mold in your inspections, the first thing you should do is have the problem assessed by professionals.  They can recommend how to move forward via a mold remediation process.  Mold can never be totally removed because it is a natural component of the air around you, but it can be managed to stay within appropriate levels.

Knowing where to expect mold in your home is an important first step in preventing mold damage.  Remember, mold loves moisture.

If you find mold in your home call the experts that can help you through your process, SERVPRO of Rolla.

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 species of fungi have been identified.

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

A few tips to prevent mold from happening in your home;

  • Keep the structure and furnishings dry.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning and repairs.
  • When things get wet, make sure that they are dried quickly. (within 24-48 hours).

The key to mold prevention is moisture control.  Water entry into structures or crawl spaces should be controlled.  If water enters a structure through a leaking roof or because of a flood or busted pipe it should be removed immediately and all affected areas should be dried out.

Make sure to look in all hidden areas of the structure.  Special attention should be given to areas that do not stand out and that might have a water intrusion. Be sure to inspect all walls, ceilings, crawl spaces and attics for moisture.

Keep in mind, have the humidity levels low (40-50) in the structure and all wet areas should be completely dried within 24-48 hours to prevent mold from growing.

If you would like to prevent mold from happening, there are things that you can do to help.

*Keep the building and furnishings dry.

*When things get wet, make sure that they are dried quickly. (within 24-48 hours).

*Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and repairs.

The key to mold prevention is moisture control.  Water entry into buildings or crawl spaces should be controlled.  If water enters a building through a leaking roof or because of a flood or accident, it should be removed immediately and all affected areas should be dried out.

Make sure to look in hidden areas.  Special attention should be given to areas that do not stand out and that might have gotten wet.  Areas frequently overlooked and not dried carefully include:

In general, all wet areas should be completely dried within 48 hours to prevent mold from growing.

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,00 kinds of fungi have been identified.

Fungi produce some very useful results.  Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages.  The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold.  An edible mushroom is imply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum).

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or business can result in mold growth.  Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control.  When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.  Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments.  If the humidity and moisture levels in a water damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply.  Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish.  Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a heath threat.

Address water damage, plumbing issues, crawlspace intrusions, and all other sources of moisture with high humidity regularly.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
