Tips to Prevent Frozen Pipes This Winter

11/12/2020 (Permalink)

It is that time of year that we are forced to be aware of frozen pipes.  Winter weather is fast approaching and we would like to give a few tips to help prevent your pipes from freezing.

Do you know all the tips and tricks of protecting pipes from freezing?  Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those that are located outside of your home.  Additional cold areas to watch out for are areas such as basements, attics, and garages.  Here are some frozen pipe prevention tips to help you out;

  • Be prepared.  Check your foundation, and locate all vents.  Place foam insulation to block off those vents leading to crawlspace areas.
  • When weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate around plumbing lines.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.  In extreme cold weather you may want to raise the temperature in the home slightly.
  • In the worst case, turn off the main water valve while the house is unoccupied.  This will ensure that if a pipe freezes and breaks, the water loss will be limited only to the water contained within the pipe.

A frozen pipe that burst in your home can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.  Make sure to always know where your shut off valve is located and call SERVPRO of Roll if the need arises.

SERVPRO of Rolla is always here to help in our community and surrounding areas 24 hours a day and 7 days a week for all of your needs.

Continued Training at SERVPRO of Rolla!

Technician training for respirator Continual Training at SERVPRO of Rolla!

Although your SERVPRO technicians are always ready to respond in your time of need, there is ample time for training.  Several services that we provide require the use of full faced respirators, therefore yearly training is key.  Training on our respirator fit test occur annually.  This annual training helps refresh the employees of the safety and OSHA requirements.  Our goal in this training procedure is to help our technicians understand the following:

  1. Why to use a respirator
  2. When to use a respirator
  3. How to use a respirator
  4. how to inspect, clean, maintain and store your respirator
  5. How to recognize medical signs and symptoms that may limit use

Air quality at work sites may become contaminated by various sources.  Gases, fumes, and mists along with smoke, dusts, microorganisms, sprays, fogs and vapors from professional cleaning products.  All of these sources could have hazards causing the technicians the need to use their respirators.

There are several areas in our work that technicians use a respirator, the following are some examples:

  • Dry cleaning upholstery
  • Thermal fogging or ULV misting
  • Applying sealants
  • Smoke and heavy soot, fire extinguisher dust, or construction dust
  • Sewage backups due to air born bacteria
  • Mold contamination

Here at SERVPRO of Rolla we keep our technicians fully trained and retrained on respirator fit test and the knowledge of the use to fully protect themselves when the situation arises.

Does Your Employees Know How to Use A Fire Extinguisher?

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Fire extinguisher Make sure that you know the proper techniques of the fire extinguisher.

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your business?  Have you asked your employees if they know the correct way to use the extinguisher?  A fire extinguisher is one of the most essential pieces of life-saving equipment in your commercial property.  While your fire suppression system is excellent for your overall facility, and alarms will ensure the safe evacuation of your employees or tenants, extinguishers provide a direct line of defense and allow for immediate response to manageable fires.  With this being said, there is a four-step process known as the P.A.S.S. technique.  Let's take a look at them all;

  1. Pull- The first step is to pull the pin form the extinguisher handle.  This will allow the handle to be fully compressed.
  2. Aim- Aim the flexible rubber hose attached to the nozzle and extend away from the handle toward the fire.
  3. Squeeze- Squeezing the handle will release the extinguishing agent. The mixture will come out quickly and somewhat powerfully, so be prepared and keep firm aim on the blaze.
  4. Sweep- Focus on extinguishing the mixture at the base of the fire, you will want to use a sweeping motion. After the fire is out, watch the area and ensure that there are no remaining embers.

Keep everyone in your work place safe with the knowledge of proper procedure of fire extinguishers.  If you have any questions regarding the proper technique, you can contact your local fire department for guided help.

Do You Know About Soda Blast Media?

10/16/2020 (Permalink)

Soda blasting demo Look at the difference soda blast media can make!

When a home or business has a fire the first thought that may come to mind is wiping the affected area. Our team of professionals will test all areas of the home, and that could be one method of cleaning.  In some extensive cases of fire damage the wood may be severely damaged where professional cleaners may not be effective. When home fires affect the stud walls, attics, and or joist systems soda blast media has been found to be very effective.

Here is a great example of baking soda abrasive blasting to remove soot carbon and even some light charring from wood after fire damage, without further damaging the structure.  This technique is four times faster than hand sanding and brushing, and leaves wood with what can be best described as a "like new" appearance.  An added bonus to using the soda blast media is the natural deodorization achieved while using this media.  Remember SERVPRO "Like it never even happened."

Where To Look for Mold in Your Home

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

If you know where to look for mold, you can stop mold damage before it gets too serious.  In Rolla, MO, this is an important issue for any homeowner.  Mold can be predictable, so it is a good idea to educate yourself about how mold works in order to stay on top of it.

What are Mold and Mildew?

Mold is a type of fungus that can cause structural damage in your home.  It reproduces via microscopic airborne spores, so it can only be seen once it begins growing as a colony.  Mold growth has a fuzzy appearance due to the multicellular filaments known as hyphen and can present in a variety of colors, such as black, brown, blue, green, yellow, pink and white.  It emits a distinct musty odor.  Mildew growth is a specific type of mold that appears chalky rather than fuzzy and is usually white or gray.  It does not cause as much damage as mold.

Where Does Mold Like to Hang Out?

Since moisture facilitates mold, it is best to identify any sources of this in your home, such as leaky pipes.  Mold likes to feed on organic materials such as drywall, paper, wood and fibers that have been exposed to water.  You should routinely inspect the following places for mold damage.

  • Basement
  • Kitchen
  • Bathroom
  • Area near HVAC
  • Anywhere that appears damp

What Should You do When You Find it?

If you locate evidence of damage from mold in your inspections, the first thing you should do is have the problem assessed by professionals.  They can recommend how to move forward via a mold remediation process.  Mold can never be totally removed because it is a natural component of the air around you, but it can be managed to stay within appropriate levels.

Knowing where to expect mold in your home is an important first step in preventing mold damage.  Remember, mold loves moisture.

If you find mold in your home call the experts that can help you through your process, SERVPRO of Rolla.

How Well Do You Understand Mold?

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.  Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Let's consider the following mold facts;

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and my enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even get a ride indoors on your clothing.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth.  Keep indoor humidity below 45%.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed, otherwise the mold may return.

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it.  You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home.

If you think that you may have a problem with no visible mold, we offer mold testing to put your worries to rest.

Keeping Safe in Flood Areas

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Midwest flooding Midwest flooding can come in fast and strong. Use extra precaution with flood watches and warnings in your area.

Parts of our country it seems have been affected by severe storms and floods this year.  The Phelps county and surrounding areas has had their share for sure.  Water from rivers and creeks that have jumped their banks is clearly not a healthy environment.  Once flood water escapes it normal channels it can pick up any combination of pollutants from the ground it runs over along with structures it runs through.

These water can contain harmful bacteria, dangerous chemicals, and insecticides to name a few.  Flood water is categorized as a category 3 and is the same category as sewage water.

Keep in mind that exposure to flood waters should be kept to a minimum.  Individuals who are extremely young, elderly, or who have a compromised immune system are especially at risk.  While some contact with flood water is inevitable, it should be done with care and kept to a emergency need only.

If flooding occurs in your area here are some helpful tips provided from the CDC, at;  https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/features/flood-safety/index.html

  • Avoid driving through flooded areas and standing water.
  • Do not drink flood water, or use it to wash dishes, brush teeth, or wash/prepare food.  Drink clean, safe water.
  • If you evacuated, return to your home only after local authorities have said it is safe to do so.
  • Listen to water advisory from local authorities to find out if your water is safe for drinking and bathing.
  • Throw away any food and bottled water that came into contact with floodwater.

If flooding has invaded your home or business, please call the clean up team at your SERVPRO of Rolla - (573)368-5555 - today!

Safety Tips For Generator Use

7/1/2020 (Permalink)

During these uncertain times, with uncertain weather events you may need to pull out that generator for temporary power.

If you have a generator on had for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions.  Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home.  Although CO can't be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death.  Even if you can not smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO.  If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or week while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulation carbon monoxide.

Firework Information and Safety

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

Fireworks are beautiful! Stay safe and enjoy!

The 4th of July holiday is fast approaching and can be fun times with great memories.  Let's have this month be Fireworks Safety Month.  SERVPRO of Rolla would like to help make sure everyone knows about some firework safety.

If fireworks are legal where you live, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Never make your own fireworks
  • Buy only legal fireworks (legal fireworks have a label with the manufacture's name and directions)
  • Store fireworks in a cool dry place
  • Kids should never play with fireworks.  Fireworks like firecrackers, rockets, and sparklers are just as dangerous.
  • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby.
  • Stay clean of others setting off fireworks
  • Never throw or point fireworks at someone
  • keep pets indoors while setting off fireworks  Animals are very sensitive and can be frightened by the stress of fireworks

The dangers of fireworks if not handled properly can result in injury to yourself and others.  The best way to protect your family is not to use any fireworks at home, with leaving the lighting to the professionals.  Check your local areas for Firework displays.

Fireworks are meant to me enjoyed by all but you will enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe.

Do You Know the Categories of Water?

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

Let our technicians help you out in your time of need.

Most people think of water is either clean or dirty, but never think of the type of clean or dirty the water actually is.  The categories of water refer to the range of contamination in the water, considering both its origin and its quality after it contacts materials present on the job site.  Time and temperature can also affect the contaminants, also affecting its category.

Descriptions of Water Categories;

  • Category 1- Category 1 water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure.  Examples of category 1 water can include but are not limited to; broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows with no contaminants, appliance malfunctions, involving water-supply lines, melting ice or snow, falling rainwater, broken toilet tanks, or toilet bowls that do not contain contaminates or additives.
  • Category 2- Category 2 water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans.  This water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter.  Examples of category 2 water can include, but are not limited to; discharge from dishwashers or washing machines, overflows from washing machines, overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine but no feces, seepage due to hydrostatic pressure, broken aquariums, and punctured water beds.
  • Category 3- Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed.  Examples of category 3 water can include, but are not limited to; sewage, wast line backflows that originate from beyond the trap regardless of visible content or color, water resulting from flooding from seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, and other contaminated water entering or affecting the indoor environment, such as wind driven ran from hurricanes, tropical storms, or other weather related events if they carry trace levels of contaminants (e.g., pesticides or toxic organic substances).

Knowing that water has different categories may help you stay safe when a water loss happens in you home or place of business.

Please call SERVPRO of Rolla for all of your emergency service needs.  We are here to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What is Unhealthy to What is Ordinary

4/16/2020 (Permalink)

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.

Fungi produce some very useful results.

  • Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages.
  • The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold.
  • A edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi.
  • A lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (penicillin chrysogenum).

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present heath concerns for some people.

Unhealthy, like intrusion of water into your home or business can result in mold growth.  Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control.  When water intrusions are not addressed right away,m the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth.  Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments.  If the humidity and moisture levels in a water damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply.  Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation provide food sources for mold to flourish.  Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

Address water damage, plumbing issues, crawlspace intrusions, and all other sources for moisture with high humidity regularly.

If you think that you may have mold call the professionals at SERVPRO of Rolla.

Do you need your Ducts Cleaned?

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

Prime example of air ducts before they have been cleaned by SERVPRO of Rolla.

Did you know that investing in regular air duct cleaning can reduce indoor allergens like dust, pollen and pet dander?  Air duct cleaning is vital to cleanliness of the air you breathe in.

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork in your home or business should be a high priority.  In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention.  Dirty ducts can circulate odors and contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

SERVPRO of Rolla provides commercial and residential air duct cleaning that can improve the air quality in your Phelps County home or business.

How often do you need your air ducts cleaned?

It is recommended to get your air ducts cleaned every three to five years.  However, if you have elderly family, pets, allergies or young children it may be beneficial to clean your air ducts more often.  If you see a lot of dust gathering on furniture just after cleaning, that could be one sign that your air ducts need cleaning.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning Process

  • The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which aromatically adapts to the ducts shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and dirt before vacuuming begins
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a collection bag.
  • Air is then filtered through a HEPA filtration system removing 99.97 percent of particles in the air-stream.  HEPA filters capture debris and keep the environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Always have a replacement filter on hand so that we may change them out at the time of service.

If you have questions about air duct cleaning services for your home or business please give us a call SERVPRO of Rolla at (573)368-5555.

Smoke Webs

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Fire can cause pretty interesting webs!

Fires are devastating disasters to all involved.  Sometimes restoration companies such as ourselves, find peculiar results from these fires.  Your first thought when you look at the picture could be "my, those are cob webs" but it is actually something that we refer to as smoke webs, soot webs, or even soot tags!  This is a picture of a home that we performed services on where smoke webs appeared in the corners of the room.

Why do these smoke webs appear?

The ionization process of burning, particularly synthetic materials like plastics, rubbers and polymers, creates charged smoke particles which can attract towards certain surfaces, and attract to each other creating chains, and ultimately web-like formations.  Webs form under certain conditions called wet smoke, which involves low heat, or smoldering type environments.  Smoke webs are typically sticky and pungent and will smudge easily.  These webs will show up in areas where there is limited air flow, typically corners and edges of ceiling.  Depending on what exactly the webs are made of, they can be more difficult to clean.

SERVPRO of Rolla is here to help!  Our franchise is locally owned and operated, so we are already close by and ready to respond immediately when you need us most.  Please give us a call today at (573)-368-5555

Air quality at work sites may become contaminated by various sources.  Gases, fumes, and mists along with smoke, dusts, microorganisms, sprays, fogs and vapors from professional cleaning products.  All of these sources could have hazards causing the technicians the need to use their respirators.

There are several areas in our work that technicians use a respirator;

  • Smoke and heavy soot, fire extinguisher dust, or construction dust

Frozen Pipe Prevention Tips

11/10/2019 (Permalink)

Winter weather is fast approaching!  Do you know all the tips and tricks of protecting pipes from freezing?  Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those that are located outside of your home.  These cold areas such as basements, attics, garages.  Here are some frozen pipe prevention tips to help you out;

  • Be Prepared.  Check you foundation, and locate all vents.  Place foam insulation to block off those vents leading to crawlspace spaces.
  • When weather is extremely cold, let water drip form faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate around plumbing lines.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.  In extreme cold weather you may want to raise the temperature in the home slightly.
  • In the worst case, turn off the main water valve while the house is unoccupied or while you sleep.  This will ensure that if a pipe freezes and breaks, the water loss will be limited only to the water contained within the pipe.

A frozen pipe that burst in your home can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.  Make sure to always know where your shut off valve is located and call SERVPRO of Rolla if the need arises.

Whether you have a small fire or a large structure altering fire, there are some Do Not's that you may want to avoid.  When you have a fire in your home the first thought is to start cleaning up yourself.  Washing clothes, shampooing carpet or upholstered furniture, attempt to clean appliances, etc.  Here are a few tips on the should not's of fire and soot.

  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water.
  • Consume any food or beverage that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water.

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 1000,000 kinds of fungi have been identified.

Our goal is to restore your property so that you don't have to replace it.  We have multiple techniques that we can use to clean your contents;

  • Wet Cleaning
  • Spray and Wipe

Helpful Information to Know!

10/8/2019 (Permalink)

Do you know that according to the National Fire Protection Association, it is estimated that some 370,000 home fires occur each year, costing close to $7 billion in total property damage?  In many of these fires, however, the fire starts and is contained in a certain are of a home or business.  Even though containment eliminates the necessity for complete demolition and reconstruction, it is still necessary for proper cleaning of soot and smoke.  Smoke and soot has a way of getting into places that do not seem possible.  Proper cleaning and deodorization is vital in order to restore your business or home to preloss conditions.

Fires are extremely dangerous, leaving you with nothing.  Always remember to check your smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly.  In a business you need to make sure you check all the outlets, and make sure your do not have to much running into one outlet.  There are so many different ways to avoid a fire, but so many ways that can go unnoticed by the average eye.  Make sure you have a fire marshal check your commercial building often.

Do You Have a Fire Escape Plan?

10/2/2019 (Permalink)

Some disasters we just don't want to think about, but planing and thinking ahead could possibly save your life and the lives of your family.

Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as one or two minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds.  A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.  Make sure to install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, level and outside each separate sleeping area.  Bring everyone in your household together and make a plan.  Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes.  Be sure to mark two ways out of each room, including windows and doors.

Here are some helpful tips to make every second count!

  • Draw a map of your home, marking 2 exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can not help them.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year, with practicing different ways out.
  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
  • Once you get outside, stay outside.  Never go back inside a burning building.

Fires are dangerous and we here at SERVPRO of Rolla want to make sure you and your family are prepared!

Fire Extinguisher Technique

10/1/2019 (Permalink)

Get to know your work place fire extinguisher

Do your employees know the techniques of fire extinguishers?  A fire extinguisher is one of the most essential pieces of life-saving equipment in your commercial property.  While your fire suppression system is excellent for your overall facility and alarms will ensure the safe evacuation of your employees or tenants, extinguishers provide a direct line of defense and allow for immediate response to manageable fires.  With this being said, there is a four-step process known as the P.A.S.S. technique.

  1. Pull-The first step is to pull the pin from the extinguisher handle.  The removal of this pin will allow the handle to be fully compressed, releasing the compressed air and chemical mixture to extinguish the flames.
  2. Aim- A fire extinguisher will typically have a short, flexible, rubber hose attached to the nozzle and extending away from the handle.  This will allow you to aim the compressed mixture at the fire.  However, be sure to avoid contact with the discharge opening as the CO2 can damage your skin.
  3. Squeeze- Squeezing the handle will release the extinguishing agent.  Its mixture will come out quickly and somewhat powerfully, so be prepared and keep firm aim on the blaze.
  4. Sweep- While focusing on the extinguishing mixture at the base of the fire, you will want to use a sweeping motion.  After the fire is out, watch the area and ensure that there are no remaining embers.  It is possible for a fire to reignite, causing more fire damage.

Keep everyone in your work place safe with the knowledge of proper procedure of fire extinguishers.  If you have any questions regarding the proper technique, you can contact your local fire department for help.

Stay Safe in Flood Areas

9/11/2019 (Permalink)

Parts of our country it seems have been affected by severe storms and floods this year.  The Phelps County and surrounding areas has had their share for sure.  This water from rivers and creeks that have jumped their banks is not a healthy environment.  Once the water escapes its normal channels it can pick up any combination of pollutants from the ground it runs over and the structures it runs through.

These waters can contain harmful bacteria, dangerous chemicals, and insecticides to name a few. This is dangerous water to wading through.  Flood water is categorized as a three and is the same category as sewage water.

Keep in mind that exposure to flood waters should be kept to a minimum.  Individuals who are extremely young, old, or who have a compromised immune system are especially at risk.  While some contact with flood water is inevitable, it should be done with care and kept to a emergency need only.

Whether you are in an urban or rural area, there are several thing that you can do to prepare for and prevent extreme heat from affecting you.  If possible, stay indoors in air conditioning.  Be sure to check on your pets who may be outdoors or bring them inside.  Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

If you must go outside, were loose-fitting, light-colored clothing and be sure to apply sunscreen often to avoid sun burn.

Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion signs

Stay Informed and Safe this Fireworks Season

6/5/2019 (Permalink)

Let's have this month be Fireworks Safety Month.  The Fourth of July holiday is fast approaching and can be fun times with great memories.  Let SERVPRO of Rolla help make sure everyone knows about some firework safety.

If fireworks are legal where you live, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Buy only legal fireworks (legal fireworks have a label with the manufacturer's name and directions)
  • Store fireworks in a cool dry place
  • Never make your own fireworks
  • Kids should never play with fireworks. Fireworks like firecrackers, rockets, and sparklers are just as dangerous.
  • Always use fireworks outside and have a bucket of water and a hose nearby.
  • Stay clear of others setting off fireworks
  • Never throw or point fireworks at someone
  • Keep pets indoors while setting off fireworks.  Animals are very sensitive and can be frightened by the stress of fireworks.

The dangers of fireworks if not handled properly can result in injury to yourself and or others.  The best way to protect your family is not to use any fireworks at home, with leaving the lighting to the professionals.  Check your local areas for Firework displays.

Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed by all but you'll enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe.

Did You Know Water Differs By Category?

5/15/2019 (Permalink)

The categories of water refer to the range of contamination in water, considering both its origin and its quality after it contacts materials present on the job site. Time and temperature can also affect the contaminants, also affecting its category.

Descriptions of Water Categories:

  • Category 1- Category 1 water originates from a sanitary water source and does not pose substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. Examples of Category 1 water sources can include, but are not limited to: broken water supply lines; tub or sink overflows with no contaminants; appliance malfunctions involving water-supply lines; melting ice or snow; falling rainwater; broken toilet tanks; or toilet bowls that do not contain contaminates or additives.
  • Category 2- Category 2 water contains significant contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans.  This water can contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter.  Examples of Category 2 water can include, but are not limited to:  discharge from dishwashers or washing machines; overflows from washing machines; overflows from toilet bowls on the room side of the trap with some urine but no feces; seepage duet o hydrostatic pressure; broken aquariums; and punctured water beds.
  • Category 3- Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents and can cause significant adverse reactions to humans if contacted or consumed.  Examples of Category 3 water can include, but are not limited to: sewage; wasteline backflows that originate from beyond the trap regardless of visible content or color; all other forms of contaminated water resulting from flooding from seawater; rising water from rivers or streams; and other contaminated water entering or affecting the indoor environment, such as wind-driven rain from hurricanes, tropical storms, or other weather-related events if they carry trace levels of contaminants (e.g., pesticides or toxic organic substances).

Tips of Mold Prevention

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment.  In fact, over 100,000 species of fungi have been identified.

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

A few tips to prevent mold from happening in your home;

  • Keep the structure and furnishings dry.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning and repairs.
  • When things get wet, make sure that they are dried quickly. (within 24-48 hours).

The key to mold prevention is moisture control.  Water entry into structures or crawl spaces should be controlled.  If water enters a structure through a leaking roof or because of a flood or busted pipe it should be removed immediately and all affected areas should be dried out.

Make sure to look in all hidden areas of the structure.  Special attention should be given to areas that do not stand out and that might have a water intrusion. Be sure to inspect all walls, ceilings, crawl spaces and attics for moisture.

Keep in mind, have the humidity levels low (40-50) in the structure and all wet areas should be completely dried within 24-48 hours to prevent mold from growing.

Mold Safety Tips for Suspected Mold Growth

4/16/2019 (Permalink)

Pre-Mitigation Photo of Mold in Closet

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it.  You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home.  When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and all fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Rolla for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don't touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don't blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don't attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don't spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO of Rolla specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it is a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Lightning Facts

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

What do you know about lightning?  Lightning can occur inside clouds, between clouds and from clouds to the ground.  Around one quarter of lightning is from cloud to ground.  When lightning strikes the ground it seeks out the shortest route to something with a positive charge, this could be a tree, a tall building or even a person.  Lightning is a violent, scary and sometime quite beautiful.  Here are some fun facts about lightning:

  • The energy contained from a single lightning strike can power a 100 watt light bulb for 90 days.
  • The irrational fear of lightning is know as Keraunophobia.
  • The odds of being struck by lightning in your lifetime is 1 in 3,000.
  • A single bolt of lightning is around 50,000 or 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun.
  • An average instance of lightning last about a quarter of a second and consist of 3-4 strikes.
  • "Lightning never strikes twice" is just a myth, lightning can strike the same location many times.

Although lightning can strike anytime, the chance for lightning increases in the spring and summer months.  Please be safe when you see lightning in the sky.  It can strike you at anytime.

Who Has Been Trained on Bloodborne Pathogens?

3/1/2019 (Permalink)

Training is a big part of our everyday routine at SERVPRO of Rolla.  Our technicians, along with Owners and office staff are trained every year on Bloodborne Pathogens.  Here is are a few little tips of information for you.

Bloodborne Pathogens are bacteria, viruses or diseases that are transmitted by contact with human blood and other potentially infectious materials (such as semen, vaginal secretions, amniotic fluid, etc.) from infected person to another person.

Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Human Immune-deficiency Virus (HIV) are three of the most widely known bloodborne pathogens.

Urine, feces, vomits, and saliva are not know to transmit bloodborne pathogens unless they contain visible blood.

Unless you have attended a bloodborne Pathogens Training class, DO NOT touch or attempt to clean-up:

  • Human Blood
  • Used Condoms
  • Any bodily fluid mixed with visible blood
  • Needles and syringes

You can not tell by looking at someone if he/she is infected; therefore all employees should be trained on how to safely clean up a spill of potentially infectious materials using "Universal Precautions", which treat all bodily fluids as if they were infectious.  Using of this method ensures that no one is exposed during clean-up.

Please never try to clean up or take care of any Bloodborne Pathogens unless you are properly trained.  SERVPRO of Rolla is properly trained and has the right Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to do the job.

Please call SERVPRO of Rolla for all of your emergency and non-emergency needs, we are here to help, (573)368-5555

Changing Winter Weather

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

Results of what can happen 12 hours later.....Snow!

When living in Missouri you never know what your going to get. Weather changes so much in Missouri you can have all four seasons in one week. Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.  *A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. **Here are some tips to prevent pipes from freezing.

*Be sure to completely drain water from the swimming pool and sprinkler lines, as well as outside hoses.

*Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air near the plumbing.

*When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.

*Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

Do You Know?

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know according to the National Fire Protection Association, its estimated that some 370,000 home fires occur each year, costing close to $7 billion in total property damage. In many of these fires, however, the fire starts and is contained in a certain area of a home or business. Even though containment eliminates the necessity for complete demolition and reconstruction, it is still necessary for proper cleaning of soot and smoke to commence, in order to restore your business or home to preloss conditions. Fires are extremely dangerous, leaving you with nothing. Always remember to check your smoke alarms to make sure they are working properly. In a business you need to make sure you check all the outlets, and make sure you don't have too much running into one outlet. There are so many different ways to avoid a fire, but so many ways we don't know what to look for that's when you make sure you have a fire marshal check your commercial building often.

Could You Have a Mold Problem?

9/20/2018 (Permalink)

Have you ever had a water damage and thought maybe that you could take care of it yourself?  Even the smallest water damage can be a big deal.  You think you have taken care of it and in a couple of weeks you start seeing mold?  Even the smallest job can turn into the biggest one.  When in need of help, you can always count on SERVPRO of Rolla.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors.  This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.  Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level.  Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and my enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture.  Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.  These colonies my produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed, otherwise the mold may return.
  • Even higher than normal indoor humidity can support mold growth.  Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Information on Hurricane Hazards

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes can be life-threatening as well as cause serious property damage. The National Weather Service lists the following as potential " hurricane hazards."

Storm surge is the abnormal rise of water generated by a storms winds. This hazard is historically the leading cause of hurricane related deaths in the United States. Storm surge and large battering waves can result in large loss of life and causes massive destruction along the coast. Storm surge can travel several miles inland, especially along bays, rivers and estuaries.

Flooding from heavy rains is the second leading cause of fatalities from land falling tropical cyclones. Widespread torrential rains associated with these storms often cause flooding hundreds of miles inland. This flooding can persist for several days after a storm has dissipated.

Winds from a hurricane can destroy buildings and manufactured homes. Signs, roofing material and other items left outside can become flying missiles during hurricanes.

Tornadoes can accompany landfilling tropical cyclones. These tornadoes typically occur in rain brands well away from the center of the storm.

Dangerous waves produced by a tropical cyclones strong winds can pose a significant hazard to coastal residents and mariners. There waves can cause deadly rip currents, significant beach erosion and damage to structures along the coastline, even when the storm is more than 1,000 miles offshore.

Preparation is the best protection against the dangers of a hurricane. Plan an evacuation route and your emergency plan, take inventory of your property and take steps to protect your home or business.

Foggers

7/24/2018 (Permalink)

Here are two types of foggers that SERVPRO uses.

Ultra Low Volume (ULV) Foggers

The ULV  will atomized liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily  penetrate the site where  odor-causing residues may accumulate. The device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.

Thermal Foggers

Thermal foggers dispense solvent based products by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor-causing particles to deodorize structures, garments, automobiles and other places where cleaning cannot reach.

EXTREME HEAT

6/19/2018 (Permalink)

A summer approaches, it is time to consider safety precautions for extreme heat in the coming months. Heat affects all people, but especially the young, elderly, sick, and overweight. Urban area residents also have a greater chance of being affected than those who live in rural areas due to the heat island effect.

According to the EPA, " the sun can heat dry, exposed urban surfaces, such as roofs and pavement, to temperatures 50-90F hotter that the air, while shaded or moist surface-often in more rural surrounding-remain close to air temperatures." These surface heat islands are stronger during the day when the sin is shining, while the atmospheric heat islands are more likely after sunset " due to the slow release of heat from urban infrastructure."

Whether you are in an urban or rural area, there are several things you can do to prepare for and prevent extreme heat from affecting you. If possible, stay indoors in air conditioning. Be sure to check on your pets who may be outdoors or bring them inside. Stay hydrated and limit alcohol and caffeine intake.

If you must go outside, ear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, and be sure to apply sunscreen often. Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, which are heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale, and clammy skin; nausea or vomiting; and fainting, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke, which is life- threatening. Sings of heat stroke are a high body temperatures (103+), rapid and strong pulse, and possible unconsciousness. If you think someone has a heat stroke, call 911 immediately and move the person somewhere cool. Reduce body temperature with cool, wet cloths or a bath. Do no give a person with heat stroke fluids, and treat the situation as a serious medical emergency (CDC).

If you lice in a humid climate, be aware of the heat index. The heat index factors in the humidity, which can make the temperature fell 15 degrees hotter.

Extreme heat is a serious danger. For more information and preparation and prevention, visit ready.gov or cdc.gov.

Although lightning can strike anytime, the chance for lightning increases in the summer months. Stay safe with these basic tips.

* Have a lightning safety plan, and cancel postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are expected.

*If you do get caught outside, avoid high grounds, open spaces, and all metal objects including eclectic wires, fences, etc. Seek shelter in a substantial building or a fully enclosed metal vehicle.

* If you are indoors, stay away from doors and windows. Do not use the telephone. Consider unplugging computers, power tools, & TV sets. Lightning may strike exterior electric/phone lines, inducing shocks to inside equipment.

There were a few safety tips for you. Please be safe when you see lightning in the sky, it can strike you at any time.

Bloodborne Pathogens Training

3/8/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Rolla does a training every year on Bloodborne Pathogens. Here is a little knowledge and information for you.

Urine, feces, vomitus, and saliva are not known to transmit bloodborne pathogens unless they contain visible blood.

You cannot tell by looking at someone if he/she is infected; therefore all employees should be trained on how to safely clean up a spill of potentially infectious materials using "Universal Precautions", which treat all bodily fluids as if they were infectious. Doing so ensures that no one is exposed during clean-up.

Unless you have attended a Bloodborne Pathogens Training class, DO NOT touch or attempt to clean-up:

* Human Blood

* Used Condoms

* Needles and Syringes

* Any bodily fluid mixed with visible blood.

Please never try to clean up or take care of any Bloodborne Pathogens unless you are properly trained. SERVPRO of Rolla is properly rained and has the right PPE to do the job. SERVPRO is here 24/7, (573) 368-5555.

Carbon Monoxide: A Silent Cold-Weather Killer

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

Just a little information on carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a gas you can not see, taste, or smell. According to ready.gov, an average of 430 Americans die each year from unintentional carbon monoxide(CO) poisoning. Oftentimes, it is the result of faulty, improperly used, or vented consumer products like furnaces, ranges, water heaters, room heaters, and engine-powered equipment, such as portable generators.

However, there are precautions you can take to help protect yourself, your family, and your employees from deadly CO fumes.

Reduce the chance of CO exposure in your workplace by performing regular maintenance on equipment and appliances that can produce CO. Install carbon monoxide detectors on every level of the home, including outside of all bedrooms.

For addition CO safety information, visit usfa.fema.gov or osha.gov.

The Science of Drying

2/1/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying? The knowledge of psychometrics is essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its preloss condition. SERVPRO of Rolla technicians are all certified in water, so what that being said they know the science behind the process of drying. If your property or business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of Rolla will...

Here is some helpful tips and some facts about drying...

*Inspect the building/structure to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.

* Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.

* Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

You ask what does, "speed up Mother Nature" mean? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material-but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature often takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out. For this reason, SERVPRO has been trained to use top-of-the-line equipment to help Mother Nature along, including equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more.

Winter Weather

12/18/2017 (Permalink)

Mold and Understanding

9/15/2017 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.  Some restoration businesses advertise "mold removal" and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy.  Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and my enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even get a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed.  Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead your to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth.  Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Are your air ducts dirty?

Air ducts before SERVPRO cleaned them.

Sweeping Away Years of Dust and Dirt-Helping Reduce Potential for Damage and Health Risks

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Rolla service is inspecting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may save you money.

The SERVPRO Proven Duct Cleaning System is Cost Efficient

Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Rolla uses a Portable Ventilation & Air Duct Cleaning System to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning Process

 * The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the ducts shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.

* Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.

* Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the environment clean.

* As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.

* Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

Flooding

7/17/2017 (Permalink)

Do you have a mold problem?

7/11/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage that sat and turned into a big mold job.

Have you ever had a water damage and thought maybe you could take care of it yourself? Even the smallest water damage can be a big deal. You think you have taken care of it and in a couple of weeks you start seeing mold? Even the smallest job can turn into the biggest one. When in need of help, you can always count on, SERVPRO of Rolla.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
  • If you see signs of Mold, call SERVPRO of Rolla, 573-368-5555 we are here to service you 24/7.

Soda Blast Media

Fire - Soda Blast Demo

Here's a great example of baking soda abrasive blasting to remove soot carbon and even some light charring from wood after fire damage, without further damaging the structure. This technique is four times faster than hand sanding and brushing, and leaves wood with what can best be described as a “like new” appearance. An added bonus is the natural deodorization achieved while using this media. SERVPRO    "Like it never even happened."
